Jaala Pulford has been a Member for Western Victoria since 2006. Prior to this she spent more than a decade as an official of the National Union of Workers. Having grown up in Castlemaine, she now lives in Ballarat with her husband, her son, a bossy rescue pug named Molly, a giant ginger cat named Archie, and the everlasting memory of her beloved daughter Sinead.
She is Victoria’s first female Agriculture Minister and the Minister for Regional Development in the Andrews Labor Government. She also serves as Deputy Leader in the Legislative Council. Since taking on these positions since 2014 she has overseen significant reform including the establishment of Regional Partnerships and a medicinal cannabis industry, mandatory electronic tagging of sheep and Victoria’s first digital agriculture program, greater animal welfare protections and making Victoria a mecca for recreational fishers.
She is a passionate advocate for regional Victorians and one of her proudest achievements is being able to have supported farmers and rural Victorians in times of crisis.
“I care about EMILY’s List because I care about advancing the things that matter to women in our community. I’m proud to have been able to play a part in legalising abortion in Victoria and to be a member of a government that is overhauling the way we respond to family violence. As a unionist and a feminist I always support measures that will assist us to overcome the pay equity gap and allow more women economic security and independence. Quality childcare is essential and it is wonderful; I admire and respect deeply the women who have cared for my own children over their lives. As Agriculture Minister it has been wonderful to re-establish the Rural Women’s Network - something precious, established in the 1980’s, that was inexplicably cut by the coalition.”
